What Does This Ancient Lightroom Technique Do?
1

Somewhere along the line I learned that a useful starting place for LR adjustments is to hover the mouse over the word Whites in the Tone panel and double click it, same thing for the Blacks.

It definitely sets the white and black points somewhere different each time and is usually different from the settings I get when using the Auto tone function (⌘U), but does anyone know what goal Adobe had in mind with this shortcut?

In case I'm not explaining it perfectly, below is an illustration showing the two sliders and the points at which one hovers the mouse.

Thank you.
