What you really want is the a1, which you excluded. It gives you usable 600 and 1.4x 840 @ 20.6MP in APSC. Someone mentioned that pairing up an a1 with 70-350 will give you a very capable and lightweight package for 525mm, but it's hard to justify when I can get a R4 in very good used condition for less than 2/5 of the price.

Don't bother with 2xTE.

Yea, the A1 or the Canon R5 (as suggested earlier) would be the best way to go given my issue with weight. Interesting comment about the 2XTE..my gut feeling is to steer clear of it as well, otherwise I'd more seriously consider the A9/100-400/2xTE.

The A7RIV does seem like my best option given the particulars...just need now to reduce my concerns about high ISO noise, though I think at most I'll go 6400 but in general, try to keep the camera at 3200 max ISO with the camera in crop mode.

This weekend we had the opportunity to shoot with a Sony 100-400 GM. I find it very sharp, the AF was fantastic even with the A7III. We also own a A6400 with the 70-350 which is sharp, small, light and great AF, it is better then on the A7III, but not once i found the A7III slow or something  i wished to be better.

Must say that the 70-350 with it’s 525mm it’s something so good that i doubt the 100-400 is worth the price tag.

Now that being said, i really liked the handling and shooting with the 100-400 GM, and I’m definitely getting it in the near future because I enjoyed it so much, the A6400 70-350 is the combo my wife uses, but i was not surprised the lenses where very close in performance.

So yes, I don’t know why but the 100-400GM was really fun to shoot with and maybe an A7RV would be something i am going to upgrade so I can use crop mode more often, but until then i am first getting the 100-400GM because besides birds i plan to shoot landscapes and kinda macro shots with it.
