Help With New Lens (Autofocus)

Hello,

I'm a photography beginner. Just bought my first DSLR recently (lightly used Nikon D5300 with 18-55mm lens kit). I just purchased a used 18-140mm lens as an upgrade and have been having issues with it. It seems to work okay at low focal lengths (18-35mm) but when it gets longer, autofocus doesn't seem to want to work, the camera's AF-assist light comes on, and it won't take pictures when I hit the shutter button. I hear the motor running when I press the shutter button halfway but nothing happens when I press it all the way. I'm able to change it into manual focus mode and when I manually focus, it will take pictures. I've downloaded the latest firmware and restarted the camera a few times. I put the 18-55mm back on as well and that works fine. Just curious if I bought a bad lens or I'm doing something wrong.

Thank you
