Focus Stacking, outside: Best method for creating the stack?

For those who focus stack outdoor subjects, where wind could be an issue, how do you create the stack?  Focus rails?  Slight adjustments of the MF ring on the lens?

Background: Have had the prosumer version of Zerene since 2016, and haven't used it much because I tend to have better luck bumping up the DoF to f18 or f22.  Now that I have a true macro lens (vs. a close-up lens), would like to revisit focus stacking.

Realize that Maggie Mole had a recent thread on this, but didn't want to hijack it.
