Well I managed to spot a bird while visiting my parents (I live in an apartment no garden...). I must say, i saw a starling too which was hiding behind a branch, disappointment i quite like starlings.

Anyhow - i hate to say it, but with small birds I struggle for reach! This is 600mm equivalent and frankly, it usually involves heavy cropping. I can see why Morris uses XT3 and 150-600. That would be 900mm! I think I might order the Tamron 150-600 g2, used! Oops.

Thanks for that input. Its basically what it holding me, 600mm vs 400mm and 2kg vs 1.1kg.

I can't decide... i know that 2/3 of usage will be handheld, and probably for 1 or 2 hour periods / walks.

Plan is to get a gimbal head in the near future, as well as a new tripo because my manfrotto is broken (plastic part with the screw that holds the center collumn ).

im considering whether a 1.4TC would give me the best solution. Not heavy, but reach when needed. I handhold the 100-400 even for long days of shooting it’s fine. As you say, 150-600 may be more difficult.
now I typically use xt3 and battery grip, but did at first use the tamron 100-400 with my xt30. Was fine too to be honest.
