My R1900 has died and after reading a lot of threads here and elsewhere, had decided upon replacing it with the Epson XP-15000. However, I have an opportunity to pick up a refurbished Epson P400. The P400 is an older printer, but ink is still available. Would the P400 be a reasonable choice?

I think either might be a reasonable choice, depending on your needs and preferences, but I don't have any sense that one or the other would be clearly better for you. Some points, FWIW:

* The P400 was introduced in 2015, so it's not that old, and not much older than the XP-15000, which was introduced in 2017.

* You probably realize this, but the P400 is R1900's indirect successor, that line having gone R1800, R1900, R2000, P400.

* Both the XP-15000 and P400 are ink oddballs. The XP-15000 uses Claria dye inks, but unlike every other Claria-ink photo printer, the XP-15000 has gray and red inks instead of light cyan and light magenta. The P400 uses the UltraChorme HiGloss 2 inkset with red and orange inks and gloss optimizer, unlike the P600, P700, P800, and P900; and with the P400 discontinued and no 'P500' or other successor announced, one might wonder whether Epson is discontinuing UltraChorme HiGloss inks.

* With any printer, I'd expect Epson (or Canon) to continue selling the inks for many years after discontinuing the printer. The unknown is whether that will mean five, or ten, or fifteen years.

* The P400's ink is probably much more resistant to fading due to light exposure than the XP-15000's ink.

* The XP-15000's ink is probably much more resistant to clogging than the P400's ink.

Thank you for your observations
