I think that image is from an astromart ad, and it shows what appears to be a focusing motor attached. It also shows the black knob like yours, plus a second, chromed-looking knob where yours appears to have an empty hole. Does the scope you're using have a rotating focuser? If so,might that be what the black knob is for? Just stabbing out in the dark . . .

Thanks Lyle, that looks interesting. However, this particular scope is on loan to me, so I won't be going out to by an autofocuser for it but I will have a look and see if I can get a similar gadget for the scope I want to buy next. I've got my eyes on an Altair 72 EDF with R&P focuser.
