What do you want in a new x100?

Thx for your input but I have AE/AF set to P but when I press and hold, the only thing it will lock is AF. Am I missing something?

I don't usually use it this way, but if I set it up for AE/AF lock, focus and hit the AEL button, the focus and exposure definitely both stay locked over multiple exposures until I press the AEL button again (S mode) or locks both while pressing (P mode).

If you set your shutter button for SHUTTER AE, it will also lock both AE and AF with a half-press.

OH...I think I know what the problem is: I want AF-ON (which also locks) + AEL, not AFL + AEL. I'll confirm this when I get home.

What, exactly, are you trying to achieve?

The same ability I had with my Nikons and Panasonics: being able to use the back button the same way as a half shutter press.  Sometimes it's just easier for me to use the back button for that function due to the fact that I can keep the button pressed all the way down vs. having to keep it mid-way between not pressed and full pressed with the shutter release.  It's particularly useful when shooting with gloves on and in cold weather when my fingers get numb.
