All fall down

Today I was in Eldon Missouri on business and I took some photographs of where the Rock Island Line railroad used to service the Golden State as she pulled into the station, or high balled through town if there were no passengers to board or unboard.

Except for a lonesome old freight handling shack on a former siding, the buildings of the Rock Island Line, have all fallen down.

I got to thinking that not one, single photograph of any of the Rockets or the Golden State that used to roar through Eldon was taken with a camera that’s likely still in service, when rail service to Eldon was suspended about 1980.

But they all might be sleeping in drawers, and could be returned to service if need be, just like the Rock Island Line. If the Rock Island Trail is approved, the line will be used as a public trail unless its ever needed again for rail service.

In another 40 years all our Olympus cameras we love so much today, will be likely sleeping in drawers, too.

Not to mention, what will become of us, in 40 years.

We owe it, to the kids today who will take pictures in 40 years to take a whole bunch of pictures today, and make double sure we provide in our trusts and wills that digital copies go to our local historical societies after we all fall down, too.
