Sigma 180mm f3.5 APO EX HSM IF macro on SD1 Merrill
6

I thought I would post some photos from this morning, showing the performance of the old 180mm f3.5 APO macro, which in my estimation is a really good macro lens for the money. First though, here are some shots of the lens itself, mounted to my tripod, with my SD1 Merrill on the lens:

Here are some sample images I shot with the lens on my SD1 Merrill:

I am not posting these to show what can be done with the lens, because I have no doubt this lens would work miracles in the hands of a more competent macro shooter than I. Still, I think these photos show that the lens is more than acceptable. It appears to be sharp across the frame at macro apertures, such as f5.6 and f11, offers reasonably good bokeh, and can auto-focus quite well. All of these shots were made using auto-focus, though I did have the lens mounted to my tripod, and I did use the 2 second timer for some of them. I forgot to try manual focusing, and I also forgot to use the ability to rotate the lens in the tripod collar, when I switched to portrait shooting. I'll have to go try that later. Is does feel smooth, when I just tried it, and the knob feels good - large enough and easy to grip. Maybe I'll post some more photos here in this thread.
