16GB is bare minimum for any substantial photo or video work. You will eat into 32GB with no problem, too. I got a new Lenovo Legion Y740 with 32GB max installed and it's sufficient but ideally I'd pick something with 64GB max.

I guess this depends on the software?

DxO PhotoLab 4 consumed 3GB memory when editing a Sony A7Rm4 ARW.

I have never seen GIMP use more than 1GB memory.

Hope I don't step on any toes when I say GIMP is not (for me) serious high-end photo or graphics editing software.

Also, it's going to depend very much on the size(s) of the file(s) you load as well as the software program initial footprint.

Again, I'd strongly suggest 16GB as minimum spec for a system with heavy photo work. My previous system, MSI GS63VR Stealth w/ i7, 16GB and GTX 1060, was brought to its knees editing more than a few 42MB images from my A7RII. It was a balancing act with Adobe memory management settings and I couldn't have hardly anything else running.

Maybe you don't use any Adobe suite software now, but better to be as future-proof as possible.
