With DSLRs, I got sick of the camera not locking on focus or hunting when it was so close, and then denying the shot, so BBF was a way take further control over the camera to avoid that. For example, doing astrophotography, you don’t even need to switch the lens to manual focus if you have previously focused it to infinity and focus is decoupled from the shutter button. I don’t know if that’s a huge concern with the latest mirrorless cameras, but I enjoy the control over the camera’s focus either way. Shooting telephoto or other challenging situations, if the subject goes out of the frame momentarily, just lifting off the BBF button can help avoid the lens hunting.
