Playing around with depth of field and I think I finally get it?

Thank you for drawing out the ice cream cones for me   I understand the focus will vary given a lot of different things. I experienced that myself. But using the doll and horse method as I've been doing if I focus on her left shoulder the whole photo appears sharper. In general I found f4 on the fz300 to be much sharper than f 2.8. although f 2.8 is often touted as being an amazing invention. after all this reading and research what I find is f 2.8 brings whatever the subject is into sharp focus and blurs everything else as a general rule, or in general the most wide open setting  of every camera will do that. Maybe, does that sound about right to you?
