I turned you diagram because in optics we usually have light traveling from left to right.

One problem is that if the lines are straight then you can't make the circles the same size:

Note that the blue lines are different sizes.

And if you make them the same sizes then near and far distances are the same:

The problem is that if you attempt to draw this in object space the lines aren't straight but actually curved, crudely:

Both the blue bars are the same height (base of the "cones") and connected by curves not straight lines.

FWIW, 2/3 and 1/3 is only at a particular distance, the ratio varies.
