One step forward, two steps back.

rather four steps back, removed:

- rear dial

This is a big removal as I use a lot the underrated and excellent XC16-50 when I want lightness and convenience when out with the family. I will see how quickly and easily it is to change the aperture setting without a rear dial. No doubt one can do it on the front dial, but that also has other functions, not least for me exposure compensation.  The same issue will impact on those who use the XCs 35, 15-45 and 50-230. We shall see.

- SCM focus selector

This removal is annoying, but may be not a show stopper depending on how easy and fast it is to change these settings. I use S normally, but C when the dog starts running.

- two fn buttons

This is really annoying as I dislike the touch screen and have it switched off.  It seems to have been done for aesthetic reasons at the expense of ergonomics. In my opinion, ergonomics should be a higher priority than aesthetics as they contribute to a better handling experience and getting the image when time is short or the moment is fleeting. The XE3 has enough customisation without the touchscreen to suit most scenarios in the field without going into the menu.  We shall see,

- front grip & back grip for thumb rest

Gain, annoying. I will probably get a third party leather half case as some of them have a slightly pronounced grip on the front. I can see the utility of the thumb grip, but I would have preferred the XE3 integral thumb grip, which is effective, minimal and adds inconsequential weight or bulk, Again, aesthetics over ergonomics. The other aspect of the Fuji thumb rest that I will test is that it seems to be higher than the Q button, which is flush to the top plate, thus making it difficult to hit with the rest mounted. The loss of other customable buttons places more emphasis on the Q button so it would be perplexing if access to it is restricted with rest mounted. We shall see.

+ repositioned joystick (stupid decision)

Agreed, I played with this on my XE3 where to use it I do not need to change my grip. I simulated moving my thumb to the position where the XE4 stick would sit and consequently had to slightly change my grip. Again, we shall see.

Yup, on all four points you are right. Bizarrely, aesthetics over ergonomics. I shall download the manual when it is available and then decide from there whether to upgrade. I am still tempted due to the updated sensor and AF (and the new 27 in a package), but I'll decide once I can play with a XE4 in my hand.
