I'm considering the X-S10, but I'm a little uncertain, and I'm hoping that a few X-S10 users out there can tell me if I'm thinking about the camera the right way.
About me: I'm a long-time Fuji X user who, until recently, never thought of myself as a "hybrid shooter." My current setup is an X-Pro3 with a bunch of primes—14 f2.8, 16 f1.4, 18 f2, 23 f2, 27 f2.8, 35 f1.4—plus the 50–230, which I use very rarely. I mostly take pictures of my family and our adventures, but I've recently been spending more time on photography as an artistic pursuit. I love the ergonomics and vibe of the X-Pro3—it's my favorite camera ever, it seems perfectly pitched at my habits and preferences.
All that said, I keep returning to the idea of picking up an X-S10 as a second body. There are a few usage scenarios where I think it could come in handy. But I've never handled the camera, and never seen it in person, and the control scheme is different than what I'm used to as a Fuji user. Here's what I have in mind:
Scenario 1: Home movies. I'd like to use it to record home videos. Nothing pre-planned—just video snapshots of our two-year-old son and other family members. I've used my phone for this in the past, but now find myself wanting higher quality video and audio. I've tried using the XP3, but I just can't get steady shots. I own a DJI Pocket camera—a little vlogging camera on a gimbal—and it's excellent, but I rarely take it with me in addition to the X-Pro; two cameras is just too much. So I have an idea that, on some days, I could just take the X-S10, and take both photos and short little videos for posterity. Is this right? Would IBIS let me use my primes—say, the 16 1.4? Or would I end up wanting to buy not just the new body but also a new stabilized lens (16-80, 18-55, 10-24, etc.?) Would I need an external microphone, too? Or would I get good-enough results with just an X-S10 and one of my primes? In my ideal scenario, the camera itself would be enough—I wouldn't have to make further investments or juggle extra equipment.
Scenario 2: Pocket camera. Sometimes space is tight, and the XP3 is pretty big. I'm thinking I could throw the 27mm on the X-S10 and it would be substantially smaller than the XP3/27, and perhaps even become "pocketable." (I'm envisioning a big coat pocket or maybe the pocket in a pair of shorts, in summertime.) Does that seem right? Or does the deeper grip on the X-S10 make it effectively non-pocketable? I just can't quite get a sense of its size.
Scenario 3: Hiking and landscapes. Later this year, I'll be going on a backpacking trip in the Sierra, and I'll want to do some photography. I've been thinking that, using the X-S10's IBIS and my 14mm f2, I might be able to make good photographs even without a tripod. I've watched Andy Mumford's YouTube review of the X-S10, and it seems like it'll get the job done. But I'm curious if anyone has any contrary views to report.
Scenario 4: Work documentary. Maybe four times a year, I go on a fairly lengthy work trip where I do a lot of documentation: visiting some place, interviewing people, seeing their workspaces, and so on, sometimes with a little tourism thrown in on the side. In the past, I've just used my phone to take photos and videos and record the interviews. But I'm thinking that the X-S10 would let me take these trips up a notch—I could use the phone just for audio recording and take better video and photos with the X-S10.
So, those are my four scenarios. Everything I'm reading suggests that the X-S10 would address all four pretty well, using my existing lens lineup. Does that seem right? I'm picturing a future in which I still use the X-Pro3 as my main everyday camera, but with the X-S10 filing the gaps from time to time. None of this is high-priority, so I can probably wait for a sale or a good used deal. One last note: I've never owned an X-T camera, but I have tried the X-T30 and found it to be too cramped for my liking; I'm hoping that the X-S10's design, while small, will prove more comfortable, because of the grip.
Thanks for reading. I'd be grateful for any insights any of you may have!
