Some older iMacs can accept a change from a spinning HD to SSD. There are good tutorials on iFixit. It made a really big difference to RAW processing on mine.

I eventually bought an iMac about eight years newer, but it has a fusion drive and still struggled on RAW processing if the files are on that fusion drive. But it does have USB 3.1, so I have all my RAWs on an external SSD and it processes them much faster than if I use the internal drive.

If it helps, I have a Crucial (Micron) 500GB SSD in my 2013 iMac 27", which transformed the machine completely.

I ran it for a while with my Lightroom Catalogue on the SSD, and master images stored on an external drive (originally FW800, then USB3), and had no issues at all with performance (other than my mentioned HDD failures).

Running my Photos library in iCloud, and on my Macs SSD (using 'Optimised' setting), is also OK.

Although, I don't actually send a lot of time on the iMac now, as I do most of my editing on the iPad Pro, and only do some organising on the iMac (just because it's a bit easier with the bigger screen).
