It really works wonders for coins - I can do a3 shot stack of high - mid - low and they usually autoblend perfectly after stacking - when I go right close - its much harder to get a great shot with full DOF after stacking - but 3 - at 18 " and baddaboom - baddabing she is aok.

That's almost equivalent to stopping down, and either increasing exposure time or ISO setting.  One advantage is that just backing up (with no changes in exposure or ISO setting) gives you a distant background that's more out of focus.  The disadvantage -- and it is a major disadvantage -- is that you get far fewer pixels on the subject.
