Sony cameras don’t need firmware for the lenses in 99% of situations. I’ve read that Sony has the instructions for the camera in the firmware of the lens. So whenever you put a lens on a camera it knows how to make it work

That's correct. All that the camera firmware updates seem to do for new lenses is to turn off the option to produce uncorrected JPEGs.  Sony only does this for heavily distorting lenses, where it would be embarrassed if customers realised just how much distortion and vignetting was being corrected in-camera.

All E-mount cameras,  from the NEX-7 onwards,  have automatic lens correction based on data provided by the lens. Even the original 2010 kit lenses provide correction data, so the system was designed into the lens mount right from the beginning, even though the original NEX-3 and NEX-5 cameras didn't do the correction.
