... and that is even AFTER developing the film. The stop your raw-converter makes to get from raw data to an RGB pixel, is analogous with the development stage and the lighting stage combined. And that is done in software, using algorithms. And those basically do that same thing you described, they try to get the picture to a neutral color balance.

Then again 'neutral' is almost never 'pleasing'. Hence my question to the OP: what do you define as 'good colour balance'?
