Because, if I want the best out of my pictures, it would be counter-productive to limit myself because of a software upgrade.

If you're talking SilverFast, I don't know (but there is a cheaper, more restricted version for $49). If you're talking VueScan $100 is the "Professional" highest spec version available.

I got my VueScan for $40 in 2004, and all upgrades have been free since then. Hamrick doesn't charge for upgrades (ever as far as I know), he makes enough money selling new copies.
