Film scanners seem to be the real thing, but the most accessible are dedicated to 35mm only and the others are stupidly expensive AND hard to find AND old enough to be a chore to make them work on an iMac (unless you buy one or two version of Silverfast, which is also crazy expensive).

I just noticed this bit. I've never looked, but I didn't expect SilverFast would be more than $100, so I looked and a reasonable version of SilverFast seems to be $99. Not what I'd call "crazy expensive". There are more expensive versions, but I don't see them adding much to the scanning bit.

However, I'd recommend you use VueScan, which is $100 for a good version (which has all the bells and whistles that Silverfast seems to want to charge extra for).
