As an aesthetics consideration, the way Great Whites render slightly out-of-focus water and reflections just cannot be beat, in my opinion. It's magic. I wish I had the time and resources to buy and use one properly.

But for hiking on trails or in fields or along the seashore (and with no intention of molesting creatures), for those of us lucky to live in areas with many birds, occasional great images await, and so do many pleasing ones.

Try fitting a Great White in the center console of a vehicle, or imagine just comfortably having it along so frequently that wonderful shots do present themselves. I doubt anybody at Canon saw the 100-500mm as a replacement for a Great White on a tripod & gimbal.

Sometimes I get lucky and the birds invade my habitat!
