Interesting and constant gear development over the years. I'm also considering the R and seeing it as the perfect balance for my needs. Definitely don't need the higher end features of the R5 and R6. Specially in video. Had the 6D II and would prefer a better sensor as an upgrade. But I am concerned wether my hands are big enough to wrap around the grip and be able to reach the screen with my thumb for focus point touch and drag. That is one unknown I'm still trying to figure out as there's no way to try a camera in store where I am.

I have medium to medium/large hands and at times it can be a bit of a stretch to work the rear screen focus point selection. But it is an awkwardness that lessens over time with practice and familiarity. The most awkward control for me is spinning the rear dial (mode selection and other functions), as it is a bit too cramped compared to the 5D4. That aspect might be a better fit with slightly smaller hands.

Oh, and I love your signature. Hoods stay fixed to lenses without filter or caps, at least that has been my preferred setup for all gear over the last fifteen years. Unfortunately, hoods for the RF 35/1.8 IS, 50/18 and 85/2 IS lenses are pretty much impossible to find at this time, or in the case of the 35, do not protect the lens gearing / optics. It isn't a deal breaker, but has proven to be the most challenging aspect of the kit as I've had to use my hand to shade when required.

Thank you! Yes apart from the obvious utility I find that the hood gives an air of "seriousness" even to a cheap kit lens. And it is an indispensable accessory to shade the lens and protect the front element.
And thanks for the feedback concerning the grip. My hands are on the smaller side. I've had the occasion to try the Fuji X-H1 as it has a close enough size to the Eos R. Can't reach the screen with my thumb while the rest of my hand is wrapped around the grip. Wish Canon had included a thumb controller instead of that Touch Bar from the get go. Oh well.

It is amazing how a lens hood can give an air of professionalism to whatever kit I may have.
