You are simply cropping a smaller angle of view out of the lens and that smaller angle of view is *equivalent* to that of a lens with the focal length multiplied by the crop factor.

I was thinking just last night that instead of providing 35mm-equivalent focal length, the manufacturers should simply provide actual focal length of the lens and its angle of view on the intended sensor(s). Get people thinking in terms of the view angle as the most fundamental aspect of the shot regardless of sensor size.
