As a D800 owner, I doubt that it will focus with any reliability at F8.   To evaluate the subject size difference of various focal lengths, you can use photoshop or even a paper print to layout the coverage of focal lengths of interest to see their effect. You can then make your own decisions on focal length.  At the 400mm length, 100mm more is a 20% difference in image size.  The effect of 100mm difference diminishes at even longer lengths.
