Nikon 500mm 4.0D ED-IF AF-S II vs 200-400mm 4.0G VR

My longest prime so far is the 300mm 2.8 (for my Canon system) which is very sharp, hand holdable and it’s night and day better than zooms with the 2x. To go slightly longer, what’s your opinion about the Nikon AF-S 500mm 4.0D II? One of the few places that have it reviewed consider it optically better than contemporary AF-S 300mm 2.8, 400mm 2.8 and 600mm 4.0 alternatives.

Is there a substantial difference between 300mm and 500mm?

How good goes with TC’s and are older II generation more recommended? Will my D800 or Df still autofocus with the 500mm and the TC-20e II or III?

Other options are the 200-400mm 4.0G VR, that gives up 100mm at the long end and perhaps sharpness, but adds zoom flexibility and VR for some handholding?
