Here's an interesting exercise.

Have look at this photo and zoom in on the lettering (sd Quattro H).

I reckon the combination of the lighting, the MF sensor and the macro lens produces a very 3D look. The lettering almost seems to float over the camera body.

Yes, that is a nice exercise in lighting, typesetting and graphic design.

Place a glossy white, embossed (actually debossed) logo on a semi-matte, slightly knobbly or wrinkled black surface and light it from the right angle, and you'll get a nice illusion of a "3D floating element" with nearly any camera, or even with your bare eyes, when viewed from the right angle. Even though the logo is engraved into the black surface, in certain light and viewing angle it appears to be an embossed logo floating above the dark surface.

Whilst it has little to do with camera sensors and lenses per se, it can indeed bee a cool study of light and surfaces, and especially in B/W, where surfaces, contrast, light and shadows sculpt the whole image.

Pricey MF gear and associated nerdsmanship are optional extras.

Yes. However, the higher the image quality, the more realistic the illusion will appear, and that's what I was referring to. There is no substitute for IQ.
