Setting focus points in viewfinder mode

Hello, I just purchased Nikon D750 DSLR and I have a question about how to set the focus points in VIEWFINDER mode. From user manual I know that I can select 1,9,21 or 51 points. So far I understand how to work with 1 point I can move it around by pressing on the multiselector and it stays in place where I move it to. However I can't figure out how to use MORE than 1 focus points. For example if I prefer 9 focus points I press on the button (the small AF/MF button) and then rotate the wheel on the front of the camera to set to 9 points. So far so good, but the question is how do I KEEP these 9 points, as soon as I move my finger AWAY from the AF/MF button, it goes BACK TO SINGLE POINT. but I need it to STAY on the 9 points. So how do I do that? I already read the user manual pg 120 -131 but it does NOT answer my question. Thank you very much for your help.
