Need guidance on modifying EXIF to aid searching.

I have digitized a few thousand slides and would like to make them searchable using search terms like aubry, dan, miller, grist, park, picnic, reunion, christmas, thanksgiving, easter, water, swim, hike, baseball, georgia, alabama, atlanta, connie, etc.

I want to keep it as universal as possible so I do not want to use a method only a proprietary software can search so I would like to enter all the data into the EXIF, if that is practical.

In case it matters, there is nothing presently in the EXIF of these images that is relevant as the originals are analogs made up to fifty-five years ago.

I know very little of this subject at this point and have been asking in the retouching forum and gotten nowhere so far.

Is what I want do practical?

If so, where do I start to learn how?
