R6 for Sports

Made the move to mirrorless. I'm using face tracking and trying to shoot soccer. Obviously the camera can't decide which kids to focus on, and I'm assuming that the old convention of whatever meets the requirements and is closest gets the focus.  I'm getting a lot of misses even as I continue to release and half press the shutter while trying to put the "action" kid in the center of the VF.
So my question is, what's the best settings for a packed sport like soccer with regards to initial subject choice as well as subject switching?

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.
