30Hz/60Hz 4K monitor weirdness with my M1 Macs

Since I got my M1 MBA and mini, System Report has indicated that my NEC PA322 was running at 30Hz at native 4K resolution. I puzzled over this and came across other reports of 4K displays having the same issue.

Today, out of curiosity about the impact of various resolution/workspace settings, I checked the System Report again. It said 60Hz, but I was running the PA322 at 3008x1692, so I switched it back to native 4K, checked the System Report again, and - WHAT THE HECK? - still 60Hz. Rebooted, and still 60Hz.

So, why on earth was System Report indicating 30Hz for the past few weeks? FWIW, it did seem that it was actually running at 30Hz, as cursor movement was fairly blurry. Now it's not.

Um, yay?
