Hum... $500 budget and no wildlife photography (long focal) experience is a receipe for not so great wildlife imagery. IMO first trip to Africa isn't the time to learn how to shoot wildlife with a DSLR/MILC unless you have low expectations and the results are bound to be not so great. It's a good opportunity for someone who wants to seriously invest into wildlife photography equipment and get a good start but I don't get the impression that it is your goal, you just want to take advantage of the opportunity of a trip to Africa once in your life and that's understandable. On that premise I second the suggestion of a bridge camera. Get the best and fastest superzoom lens bridge camera you can get with the budget you have and you are likely to achieve more satisfying result with that than any M43 bargain kit.
