Re: Thinking of getting a Nikon 24-70 2.8 VR

I've had the 24-70 f/2.8 G lens since I bought my first Nikon camera, the D800E, sometime around the spring of 2012. The lens works great and it's the focal range I shoot the most when hiking and shooting landscapes.

I have primes covering a lot of this range (16/2.8 FE, 20/1.8, 35/1.8, 50/1.4, 60 mm macro, 85/1.8, 105/2.8D macro ...) but when I'm going hiking in So Cal or the desert I prefer to use this one very sharp lens over changing lenses in a dusty environment. And it's just easier and more versatile to have one lens to shoot from wide angle to beyond the normal focal length.

Sometimes I carry the 14-24 mm f/2.8 or the 70-200 mm f/2.8 to change my point of view. But for everyday use I can't beat the range of the 24-70. I use it for shooting people too (not literally, but images of them) .

People kept asking for VR in this lens and I've always thought it was not essential for a 24 mm to 50 mm focal range. Only occasionally at 70 mm do I need IS or VR. You can theoretically hand hold a shot at 24 mm at 1/30 second or 50 mm at 1/60 second. I'm a bit shaky sometimes so I try to double that speed, or shoot at 1/60 to 1/125 for this range of focal length. At 70 mm I might want my monopod to stabilize the camera.

I've had a minor case of the Zoom Grind issue but it seems to have gone away on it's own for now. What have people been spending to repair this through Nikon, other than replacing the entire lens with the 24-70 f/2.8 VR?
