Pictures of apples and oranges side by side might be handy as a test of colour rendition.

DXO review do good and thorough smartphone tests on a limited number of phones.

The real question is 'what is a picture for' .  Some need High Res, some need specialist kit like astro photography, some  just need to be pleasing images.  A lot of early Hockney stuff - his grand canyon 'joiners' for instance - are brilliant pictures but technically a bit rubbish.  Meanwhile you get a lot of  "look at my pixels" images that are abject - all they convey is how much the photographer has spent on kit, how carefully they have set up and exposed the shot  and how little they have thought about the image they are making.

Now, I'm off to write to  Don McCullin to say I don't really like his work in Vietnam because some of them are a bit soft in the corners of the frame ..... or maybe not.
