I couldn't help but wonder what objectively defines this range. Why stop at $4000? The R5 is $3899...

What objectively defines the price range? The price. If it falls in between $2,500 and $4,000 then objectively, it's within the range. Nothing you or I can say to change that at this time.

Why stop at $4,000? They do actually state this in the Buying Guides but they do so to keep the cameras comparable. The term comparable is subjective. But why would anyone expect a camera that's $2,000 to be comparable (as an entire package) to a camera that's several times more in price?
