Same Moon, different optics and cameras
6

I finally managed a decent whole-moon image with my Celestron C-5 (and Pentax K-1), and have a SD1M/600 mm image taken the same evening to compare. The difference in effort required is startling. For the 600 mm Sigma image, I rested the optics on a car's roof and shot off a few hand-held. No self-timer, just the OS in the lens.

Because of the limited in-focus FOV of the C-5, I took 10 images, each centered on a different part of the Moon. (Actually, I also took about a dozen images with the SD1M -  I just chose the single best image.)

This is the Sigma image I got:

Then I had to wait about 90 minutes for the Moon to rise high enough to be visible from my fixed mount so I could use the C-5. I describe here the steps I took, and show the full-size image. But here's the direct comparison. (For this comparison only, I converted the C-5 image to B&W)::

Sigma on left.

I did the processing as equivalent as possible, but the Sigma image naturally shows a lot more local contrast, even though the detail is far better in the C-5 image:

In these series of comparsions, the Sigma image is on the right, sorry.

I know, it's lunacy.
