First, learn your camera and lenses.

Then, decide what you want to shoot; eg, birds, landscapes, people, street, B&W, etc.

Shoot in Raw.

Then think about how you want to organize them.

After that, you can fine tune your software.

You can start with PhotoShop Elements, ACDSee, OnOne, etc. You can't go too far wrong as you figure out what you like to shoot, and how to present it. As you develop a workflow, the shortcomings of each will become apparent.

I ended up with Lightroom & Photoshop. You may end up someplace else.

I'm not so sure about shooting RAW to start with. RAW can be somewhat intimidating at first.

If you can shoot jpeg and RAW. 'Play' with the jpegs at first then when comfortable you can move onto RAW.

I downloaded Capture One 20 express and so far I like the main features and have been editing RAW so far, and they convert for me so it works. It's just that I want a little more control how and what I edit...So the express is only going to hold me over a little long I am thinking
