Thanks for sharing. What telephoto focal length/zoom range do you travel with?

I consider weight, bulk, focal length coverage, and price when traveling.  I don't want anything that would be painful to replace should it be stolen, lost, or broken.

So for my Nikon DX system I carry:

  • 11-18
  • 18-55 'kit' lens
  • 70-300
  • 85mm macro

I generally take all of these on trips, but that doesn't mean I drag all of it around every place I go.  On a rough physically challenging hike, for instance, I might take only the 18-55 and 70-300.  Sunrise on the beach, maybe only the 18-55 and the 11-18.  Whatever I predict is most likely to be essential.  Forest hiking on a cloudy day, no way I'm skipping the macro.

The famous "snake road" migration in Southern Illinois.  How close you wanna get to one of these?  I chose to shoot at 300mm (no cropping).
