In the film days I not only mounted a filter for UV protection, but also to protect the front lens element. Imagine you're in a crowd with your camera strapped around your neck and you or someone makes a sudden turn and their 2 karat diamond ring meets your lens.

But after several decades that has never happened to me. And I've come to realize that to squeeze the best out of these tiny-sensored cameras, additional glass should be avoided and only employed as needed for the shot. Therefore, I recommend removing the filter and - when needed - use the lens hood to keep errant objects like rings or twigs out of harm's way.
