I think that is a very important subject yes....I usually use my 300/2.8 when shooting my dog and most of the times it's at f2.8
That gives me a DOF of only 20cm when the subject is 10 meters out...which is not even my dog's whole head.

And one where she was very close (probably around 4 meters)

The first one gives you some leeway, but not a lot still...
