As was pointed out, the woodpecker is after insects in the eves.  Likely, those insects are carpenter bees,  If you examine the eves closely and the infestation is from carpenter bees, you will see small round holes about 3/8" to 1/2" in diameter.  That's the bee's entrance.  They then make a turn and bore a tunnel for the larve and that's what the woodpecker is after.
