Do we have actual confirmation yet that Sigma (or others) have actually cracked the RF code? I’d think that Canon would want to keep (RF) lens compatibility as proprietary as possible, for as long as possible (to sell their own lenses).

When others do reverse-engineer the RF code, I’d speculate that they’d start off with a non-stabilized prime first, as the IS/IBIS interface seems trickier to manage.

I’m all for competition though.

The aren't "Cracking" any code or they will have a lawsuit! They have to negotiate a contract allowing them to use Canon Algorithms and Code before they jump into that water. Otherwise they are stuck in the EF Algorithm world. Just the way it IS.

They can't use Canon's actual code without license, and Canon has always claimed that they never provide such license.

But Sigma can create a "work alike" code that looks like Canon's code to the camera...that's perfectly legal, and it's what they've been able to do so far.

Never is a long time and Canon may selectively licensce at their discretion but Signma has no need unless Canon has patent protection for any new methods of signaling between the lens and body that are new and novel if they exist. Canon is under no obligation to make such sharing dealings with specific companies public.
