agreed, but the amount of backlight in all of these photographs is enormous; so regardless, there would be extreme shadows/contrast/ exposure  differences between the ambient light and the well exposed light on their faces.

It just seems a huge dynamic range difference between their faces and a full sun background ... so I'd guess either fill light or major post processing.

I just kind of expected a lot of people to comment in the fashion of shooting this style; but it is seeming like it is not a very common technique still. Yet I find a lot of images are being shot in this fashion currently.
