Birding Field Trip_P950

On Tues. it was so nice to get outdoors - a two hour drive to a tiny, quaint historic town Arrow Rock, Missouri to see if a White-winged Crossbill that was reported at backyard feeders remained. I spent two hours enjoying the Crossbill who came and went along with other feeder birds - particularly nice I was the only one present - peaceful. I had in my mind if others were present I could surely social distance.

This far Northern Boreal forest bird has managed to find its way all the way to Missouri.

How fortunate and privileged I was to observe and photograph this very unique species. Of the about 10,000 bird species on earth only five, all in the Finch family have crossed bills. We have two species of Crossbill in North America - Mother Nature at her finest - you may enjoy this two minute video showing how important that bill is - (Cornell Lab of Ornithology)

I'll bet the one I observed thought he was on a wonderful holiday - just casually munching away on sunflower seeds - no work to this.

Stay safe and healthy - thanks for looking.
