Hello All,

Apologies in advance for my ignorance with this stupid question.

Is the Nikkor DX 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED with D500 a workable combination.

Tried this today for some plane spotting, the Auto Focus left me disappointed. Not sure if this is a wrong combination or is there some problem with the gear.

Appreciate any feedback

Regards

Tarun

I have my 55-300 on my D300, and it works. It also works on a D7200, but...

My 55-300 needs -2 AF adjustment on the D300 at 300 mm, not bad, but it progressively backfocuses as I zoom out to 55 mm. A -4 AF adjustment sort of provides enough compromise to cover the full zoom range. And it takes its sweet little time focusing. Slow is too kind of word to describe its focusing speed. The only other lens I have that is as slow is an 18-105.

Once I put a 70-300 AF-P on my D7200 and enjoyed the speed and accuracy of the AF-P lens, I stopped using the 55-300 on the D7200. Would have done so on my D300 except the 70-300 AF-P is not compatible with it.
