In the Canon RF forum people are discussing the use of the Canon 100-500 with TCs on the R5 and it seems to work quite good.

I have a z6 and when the 100-400 S lens will be released I would get one with a T,"c ( most probably the 1.4). Looking at the size of the lens compared to other lenses on the roadmap, most probably the 100-400 will be f5.6 or f6.3 on the long end . Mostly I will use that combo for not movin subjects or big animals .

What is your opinion? Will such a f5.6/f6.3 lens work acceptable on a Z6 with a TC or is there a big difference in AF capabilities between Z6 and R5? ( or Z6 II)

Obviously, this is a thread with not much more than speculation since Nikon is holding facts tightly. Given that, I can't imagine the 100-400 S model lens being anything slower than f/5.6 on the long end. I reach that conclusion based on the F mount 200-500mm being f/5.6 from end to end. Like PLShutterbug, I use that lens, along with the TC 1.4, for completely satisfactory results on my Z7.

My only complaint about the 200-500 is the size and weight, especially coupled with the FTZ on the Z7. It's hand-holdable in good light for short durations. I'm hoping the Z lens 100-400 will be smaller and lighter.

Problem with asking for smaller and lighter is smaller apertures. But if I had to guess...

100-400 4.5-5.6

x1.4 = 140-560 6.3-7.8 (might officially be f/8)

vs

200-600 4.5-6.3

The 200-600 will certainly offer a larger aperture if you're willing to lug the beast around. Tripod recommended for that one.

But the Z lens is only a 100-400mm, in place of a 200-500mm. I'm thinking it will be the same f/5.6, giving it a chance of being somewhat smaller and lighter. My fingers are crossed, anyway.

According to the published photo of the Z roadmap, the 100-400 S silhouette appears to be about the same size as the Z 70-200f/2.8 S. So it will be considerably smaller and lighter than the 200-600 whose silhouette appears to be in ballpark of the 400 and 600 S primes.

If I've seen that photo, I don't remember it. Do you think the 100-400 might be an f/4? That would be very nice. I'm thankful to have a 200-500 that performs as well as it does. It's probably what I will have for some time to come. I dream a lot more than buy.

When I compare the size if the 100-400 S lens with the much bigger 180-400 f4 it is very unlikely that the S lens will have f4 on the long end.

Most probably it will be a f4.5-f5.6 as the existing 80-400 F mount lens.

You’re probably right; I was wishing that with an opening size equivalent to the 70-200f/2.8 along with the Z-Mount diameter perhaps f/4 was possible. I guess it’s a win-win because I’d love to have an f/4 that size but I want the price of an f/5.6.

It would have to have a 100mm aperture at 400mm focal length to achieve a focal ratio of 4:1 or f/4. I would bet the actual aperture is the same as the 70-200 2.8: 71mm.
