Is 17-35mm f2.8 Nikon still good?

This is an apt description of the behavior of my copy of the 17-35/2.8. But---some of the readers here seem to want their lenses to match the center performance at 1mm in from the corner. Yeah...that's not going to happen.

If you want to use your f/2.8 for things like astro, "but it sharpens up by f/8" won't help you very much.

The point is the 17-35 is simply not a great lens for astrophotography or other subjects where its inherent limitations preclude its use. There is plenty of info here and elsewhere online about how the UWA Nikkor 2.8 zooms perform to be able to decide if the lenses will meet your particular needs. Flickr has examples of images made with the 17-35 and other versions of the lens.
