Interesting flickr searches Iain. By themselves I don't think they say anything about how photography has changed or whether it’s been overtaken by birds, if that's what you meant. The results do seem to reflect how the camera market grew far more fragmented in the 10-15 years between the D100/200 and the D500, and how if Nikon was going to stay in the high-end Dx DSLR market, it had to go for even more specialization.

You can argue that the D500 is a highly capable camera for any type of photography, but its unique mix of features (robust AF, deep buffer, high frame rate, rugged build, crop sensor for reach, etc) seems calculated to appeal most strongly to a narrow, well-defined audience. The very bird-y D500 search results suggest that Nikon had at least some success in exploiting a small open space in a crowded camera market (even if it took them a little too long to get there).
