Monitoring video with iOS/Mac

I'd like to have a larger screen to monitor video with. Cables are fine, bulk is fine - it's a fairly static situation videoing indoors.

I know the 'correct' solution is an HDMI field monitor, but with phones, iPads and laptops coming out of my proverbial, it seems silly to buy something else with a lower quality screen.

I've seen a whole load of stuff about tethering to Macs for stills photography, and lately a load of stuff about using the camera as a webcam, but I don't want either really. I just want to be able to see a larger version of the live view. Is this possible?
